Fishing in Northern Mongolia
Taimen (Hucho taimen), the legendary “River Wolf” of Mongolia, is the largest salmonid in the world and the ultimate prize for adventurous anglers. Catching this fish is a unique experience on itself due to its raw strength and I will not forget my first time catching a Taimen on a fly.

These ancient fish can grow over a meter and live for decades, ruling the pristine rivers of northern Mongolia. Catching one on a fly rod is a true bucket-list experience and demands both patience and respect.
Besides taimen, the rivers hold a variety of native species: lenok trout that often take dry flies, grayling in the faster riffles, and Amur pike in the quieter side channels.
Fishing here is not easy, but that is part of the adventure. To succeed in this remote area, we use our own camping and a carefully planned program on location. Instead of fixed lodges, we camp in the same way Mongolian nomads have for centuries, using a Ger. Additionally we will rent the winter homes of local nomadic people to stay close to the water. We can move along the river, stay close to the best waters, and live in direct connection with nature. Meals are prepared in camp, evenings are spent by the fire, and the experience is as close to wilderness and tradition as possible. An outdoor shower will be available.
Trip details
Starting point and finish: Our adventure starts from Ulaanbaatar where we will pick you up from your hotel or airport. We will travel 2 days towards the north of Mongolia, with an overnight stay at a resort, after which we will head for the most remote areas in Mongolia.
Capacity: 4 anglers per trip. Each group is guided by an experienced local guides with extensive knowledge of the river system and a driver who provides logistical support.

Fishing Methods: Fly fishing with streamers, surface flies, and nymphs.
Fish Species:
Taimen (Hucho taimen): apex predator, targeted in deep pools and river bends.
Lenok trout (Brachymystax lenok): prolific and eager to take flies.
Grayling (Thymallus arcticus): abundant in runs and riffles.
Amur pike (Esox reichertii): strong predator in quieter channels and oxbow lakes.
Climate: The northern Mongolian season offers mild summer days and crisp nights. Expect temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Weather can be changeable, so layered clothing is essential.
Suitable travel period:
Summer (Jun–Aug): Peak insect hatches → plenty of surface activity, great for dry fly/nymph fishing, though rain can make water murky.
Autumn (Sep–Oct): Cooling water → trout feed heavily to prepare for winter, clearer water improves conditions, higher chance of big catches. However, we need to avoid the week that the leaves are falling.
Skill Level Requirements: Suitable for intermediate to advanced anglers. A good level of physical fitness is recommended due to long fishing days, wading, and living in a camping environment.
